‘Flavour Principle,’ ‘Gastro Grilling,’ ‘The Stop’ win Taste Canada awards

TORONTO – Culinary personality Lucy Waverman, who is the author of eight cookbooks, has won Taste Canada’s award for her most recent book, “The Flavour Principle: Enticing Your Senses with Food and Drink.”
Written with fellow Globe and Mail columnist Beppi Crosariol, the book that explores the principle flavours from which all recipes stem, won in the general cookbook category Monday. Published by HarperCollins, it has also won the 2014 Gourmand Awards Best Food and Drinks Cookbook in Canada.
Danny St. Pierre was Taste Canada’s French winner in the same category for “Dans la cuisine de Danny St-Pierre” (Les Editions La Presse).
In the culinary narratives category, “The Stop: How the Fight for Good Food Transformed a Community and Inspired a Movement” (Random House Canada) netted a prize for Nick Saul and Andrea Curtis. David Levesque Gendron and Martin Thibault won in the same category for “Les saveurs gastronomiques de la biere”(Editions Druide).
Philippe de Vienne and Ethne de Vienne won in the category recognizing single subjects for “Les Regles d’or des epices” (Editions du Trecarre) and chef Ted Reader got the nod for “Gastro Grilling: Fired-up Recipes to Grill Great Everyday Meals” (Penguin Canada Books).
Jennifer Bain’s “Toronto Star Cookbook: More Than 150 Diverse and Delicious Recipes Celebrating Ontario” (Appetite by Random House) was the winner in the regional/cultural cookbooks category.
Taste Canada’s Hall of Fame Award for 2014 was conferred upon Michel Lambert, author of the multi-volume tome, “L’Histoire de la cuisine familiale du Quebec.”
The Hall of Fame Posthumous Award went to Mona Brun (1920-2013), the British Columbia-born cookbook author and television personality.
During the awards ceremony, hosted by cookbook author and TV host Ricardo Larrivee, Taste Canada acknowledged the huge contribution made to the culinary community by Toronto’s Cookbook Store, which closed this past winter after 31 years in business.
Donna Dooher, a chef, cookbook author and restaurateur, was announced as the new national chair for Taste Canada, replacing Karen Gelbart, who is stepping down after three years.
In a nod to the food writers who publish online, there will be a new award next year. The Food Blog Award will be presented and administered by Taste Canada and the Food Bloggers of Canada.
The competition drew 58 submissions this year. Submissions for the 2015 edition will open on Jan. 1, 2015. Visit tastecanada.org for details later this year.
