Bridgeland celebrates new affordable housing complex

The Bishop O’Byrne Housing Association is celebrating its latest affordable housing complex in the north-east.

It’s been open since January 2013 and was built with a ten million dollar grant from the provincial and federal governments.

The remaining mortgage will be paid off using funds raised through the Resolve.

Resolve is a campaign uniting nine social agencies to help end homelessness in Calgary.

The building is home to 87 residents, 20 of which overcame homelessness to achieve independent living.

Charles Dixon struggled with addiction and was on the streets prior to moving in.

He lost his leg from diabetes and couldn’t be released from hospital until he had secured a wheel-chair accessible home.

Dixon said there was no worse feeling than having nowhere to go.

“Finding handicapped housing in Calgary is seriously impossible, and it’s subsidized because I’m on fixed income, it’s crazy. I just stumbled into this, it had just happened that they’d opened this building and there was one suite left that’s how close it was.”

The building has a library, an exercise room and sun rooms on each floor.

A one bedroom suite at Columbus rents for $680.00 per month, while a 2 bedroom costs $962.00 per month.
