AHS investigates possible D-68 limb weakness

Alberta Health Services confirm an investigation is underway to determine if Enterovirus D-68 is to blame for some limb weakness in at least four patients in Calgary.

Of the fifty lab-confirmed cases in Alberta, 29 are in Calgary and four children are exhibiting some neurological symptoms that includes weakness in the limbs. This, after health officials in B.C. reported two cases of partial paralysis in kids being treated for the respiratory virus.

Also on Wednesday, it was confirmed a 10-year-old girl in Rhode Island died less than 24 hours after being admitted to hospital for treatment of Enterovirus D-68 which has swept across most U.S. states and several Canadian provinces and is being blamed for sending hundreds to hospital.

AHS says if a child is exhibiting signs of extreme muscle weakness, contact a doctor right away.

Most patients who contract the virus show only mild symptoms and may never know they had Enterovirus.

The best way to protect yourself is to follow the same rules as the common cold: wash your hands frequently, avoid people who are sneezing and coughing and keep your hands away from your face.
