Earthship Greenhouse weekend workshop at Grow Calgary

What’s made out of recycled tires, pop and beer cans, cement and built into the side of a local hill?

It’s called an earthship greenhouse which will help grow food year-round and is now under construction at Grow Calgary.

The project’s Scott Davidson tells 660News, all the recycled materials work well together and the structure also makes full use of natural sunlight.

He says, “The tires themselves are thermal mass essentially, which they hold heat from the sun because the entire structure faces to the south and it absorbs all the sunlight and heats up all the mass stored in the tires and because there’s no place for that heat stored in the mass to go to, it radiates back into the living space. So, it keeps a stable temperature of anywhere between 14 and 18 degrees Celcius, year-round.”

Davidson adds, he’ll gladly take donations of regular-sized beer and pop cans to add into the walls.

You’re more than welcome to drop by Grow Calgary west of Canada Olympic Park for an earthship greenhouse workshop taking place all weekend long until this Monday night at 8:00 p.m.
