Enterovirus continues to spread

A respiratory illness that has hospitalized children across North American is continuing to spread in Alberta and Calgary appears to be the hotbed.

According to Alberta Health Services, there are now 49 confirmed cases of Entorovirus D-68 in the province, 28 in Clgary.   those cases were confirmed between July 1 and september 10.

More people are also falling ill around the country.  B.C. reported 7 confirmed illnesses earlier this week.

However, AHS still doesn’t know if the strain of D-68 here is the same as the strain that has sent children to hospital with breathing difficulties in more than 20 U.S. states.

Enterovirus has been around for years, but it is unusual to have so many cases.

The best defence is to wash your hands frequently, and cover you nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing and don’t put your fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth.  If you have symptoms, don’t visit family in hospital or at care homes.   For more information click here.
