School bus drivers needed in Calgary

At least one school bus company in Calgary says a driver shortage is the worst in the city in a long time.

General Manager of Southland Transportation Chris Castellarin tells 660News, they urgently need to fill about 35 spots.

“If someone applies today, they’ll be in a training class tomorrow, and within five to seven business days they’ll be on their own route,” he said. “The big sell for us is that it’s a great job for young moms or dads that don’t want to worry about daycare, because they can bring two of their own children on the bus.”

He says the shortage is also leading to bus delays that are sometimes as long as an hour.

He believes one reason for the shortage is more people are finding high paying work in Fort McMurray and Saskatchewan.
