Cities looking for extra cash should raise property taxes: report

A new report by the University of Calgary and University of Alberta suggests cities that need more money should raise property taxes, not ask for the power to add new taxes.

Distinguished Fellow at the U of C Public Policy Bev Dahlby says there’s a lot of wiggle room.

“Municipal property taxes in Alberta have been at a relatively low level of about 2.55 per cent of personal income since 1988, and total property taxes relative to income in Alberta are at their lowest level in 60 years,” he said.

Dahlby says he’s not calling for a big hike in property taxes, but suggests they be the main source of revenue as opposed to other taxes.  He says if people want a high level of service, it’s the way they should pay.
