Calgary man accused of torturing and killing a dog and cat denied bail

The man accused of horrific animal abuse against a dog and cat earlier this year will remain behind bars.

Nicolino Camardi, 19, was denied bail by Justice Paul Mason Tuesday afternoon and will be back in court on October 2nd.

Back in January, a starved dog was found dead with tape around its muzzle in an alley in Willow Park and later a cat was found in the same area with tape covering most of its face.

After a lengthy investigation, Camardi was arrested in May and has been in custody ever since.

He appeared motionless throughout most of the afternoon via CCTV and after the decision, Daisy Foundation founder Heather Anderson said she was very relieved he was staying put.

“I’m very happy that he’s not getting out because he truly is a dangerous offender,” she said. “I am really afraid that if he gets out that we are looking at, his lifetime will be nothing but stress for the whole world, because as far as I’m concerned, he has got to be a considered a dangerous offender.”

She also explained her feelings going into the day, after the hearing was delayed multiple times for more information.

“I was really fearful that he was going to be let out and the longer he stays in jail, the better off the whole world is, that’s what I really believe,” she said.

There is a publication ban on any evidence of the case and submissions by the Crown and defense.

If convicted, he could spend up to five years in prison.
