Alberta health preparing for Enterovirus

Alberta Health Services is taking precautionary measures after the appearance of a rare respiratory illness in Alberta, one that has shown up in kids in more than 20 States south of the border.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. James Talbot told 660News, they are not sure if this strain of Enterovirus D-68 is connected to the cases in the U.S. and are investigating to see if there is a link.

However, he said they have set up extra treatment spaces in Calgary.

“Alberta Health Services has policies and procedures in place to help manage an increase and ensuring that patients receive the care they need,” he said “For instance they’ve added five additional treatment spaces to the pediatric ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at the Alberta Children’s Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Despite the cases, Talbot said they aren’t sounding any alarms adding it is normal at this time of year to see the number of kids admitted for respiratory problems on the rise.
