SAIT opens new building for power engineering students

A record number of students are returning to SAIT this week and for those seeking a future in power engineering, they now have a brand new learning space on campus unlike any other.

The $26 million, 40,000 square foot teaching lab features elements throughout, which simulate real-world power generation systems.

SAIT president David Ross said support from Cenovus helped the school nearly triple the number of power engineering students since 2011.

“A very step-up move by Cenovus. Their support allowed us to accomplish what we’ve accomplished here,” Ross said.
“We receive support from industry across all sectors here in the province. The core of who we are is about having successful students go out and be successful in industry and this is a good example of that.”

The building was complete in 2012.

It took the two years since then to install the equipment used to give students the hands on experience they’ll need to join the workforce down the road.
