Seed saving is important

As more Calgarians and local communities ”sprout” on the idea of growing their own organic vegetables and herbs, a family farm in central Alberta is producing  premium seed that’s open pollinated, non-GMO and untreated.

Harmonic Herbs thinks seed should be shared and celebrated, not patented and monopolized and encourages ”seed saving”.

Owner Kathleen Vanihinger tells 660News, the province already produces a lot of seed, but it’s mainly commercial, which is very different from garden seed.

She says, “What we’re concerned with is the lack of seed that is available and the first link in a secure food chain is the seed, so it’s illogical for us to be concerned about local food and not be concerned about local seed, too, if we’re really serious about food sovereignty.”

Harmonic Herbs doesn’t use any synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides.

Their seed is available online and in select stores across Alberta.
