Tory leadership hopefuls debate in Calgary

They’ll work together under the right terms.

The three PC leadership candidates met Friday afternoon at the Grey Eagle Casino to discuss their platforms.

Topics ranged from energy and education to the tourism industry.

Ric McIver and Thomas Lukaszuk called the term limit proposal from Jim Prentice unacceptable and unconstitutional.

“The idea of not letting the voters deciding who sits in their Legislative Assembly is offensive to me” said McIver, “The ultimate entitlement is an elected person deciding who else gets to sit in elected office”.

“Our Prime Minister today could not be a Prime Minister if that rule was to be in effect and many many other great leaders in this province inlcuding Peter Lougheed or in the UK Prime Minister Churchill would not be a Prime Minister if that were to happen” said Lukaszuk.

While Prentice said the system works for our neighbours to the south, so why not us?

“I don’t know why we wouldn’t have reasonable limits for someone who is in the position of premier and for someone who is in the position of MLA” Prentice said.

Lukaszuk and McIver say they would welcome each other in to cabinet if chosen as leader but Prentice is not an MLA, the former MP he said he focused on the task at hand.
