City hall demonstrators call for terrorists in Nigeria to “bring back our girls”

About 40 people in green shirts labeled with #UnitedAgainstBokoHaram held signs and chanted in front of city hall Thursday.

One sign that read “Bring Back Our Girls” was held by Bamidelle Esan, who said the group hopes to remind people about the hundreds of girls who were kidnapped by a labeled terrorist group in Nigeria about four months ago.

The roughly 200 girls were taken from their school by Boko Haram militants in a push to impose extremist Islamic law.

“It’s been over 125 days now and nothing’s been done and I have a sister too so it really hits home with me. If she was taken it would be devastating,” said Esan. “A couple of people have come up and said this is a good thing you’re doing so hopefully the government can hear something about it and something can be done in the next days or weeks.”

Other messages on signs read “say no to terrorism” and some girls held signs that read “”this could have been me”.

Ogeh Cynthia Onuzulike said Boko Haram has changed her peaceful motherland into a place that is out of control.

“This is so not acceptable. Only god knows what is happening to these girls is. They have been gone for the past four months now and yet we don’t even know what happened to them,” said Onuzulike. “Only god knows if some of them are still alive. We want them back, even if they are dead, we want their dead bodies, we want to see them. We just want them back home, that’s all.”

Organizers with the Calgary chapter of Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) say they are planning more such rallies.
