Athletes threaten legal action in turf-wars when Canada hosts 2015 Women’s World Cup

A group of world class soccer players say Canada is showing gender discrimination and violating human rights laws by hosting the Women’s World Cup on artificial turf.

In less than a year, the nation will host the event and if organizers do not replace fields with real turf, the group of soccer stars said they will take legal action.

The group, which does not officially include any Canadian players, said the artificial turf is like playing on concrete, causes more injuries and degrades the women’s game.

The matches will be held across Canada, including in Edmonton, but the Globe and Mail reports the biggest point of contention is Vancouver’s B.C. Place, where the finals will take place.
