Video showing motorcycle ride through Carleton University tunnels sparks probe

OTTAWA – Carleton University says it is investigating after a video showing a motorcyclist speeding through its system of narrow underground walking tunnels was posted online.

The footage shot from a helmet-mounted camera shows the rider of the dirt bike zooming through the school’s tunnels at night, with the speedometer showing nearly 90 km/h.

The rider, wearing a motorbike jacket and gloves, squeezes the machine through the doors before driving for about five minutes through the tight passages.

No one else is seen inside the tunnels except for a second person who also takes footage of the ride.

Spokesman Steven Reid says information from the school’s internal probe will be shared with Ottawa police for possible charges.

He says if the rider is a student they could face sanctions such as a suspension, a $500 fine and up to 35 hours of community service.

Reid said the linking tunnels are monitored by school security.

“There are cameras in the tunnel system and our patrols continue in the summer months and include patrolling the tunnels. This is in addition to a number of other security measures we have in place,” Reid said Monday in an email.

The video was uploaded to YouTube on Saturday. Its description reads: “Underground Carelton (sic) U tunnels, I rode them, it was loud, and slippery.”
