Advocacy group warns of looming housing crisis for low-income seniors

A seniors’ advocacy group is warning of an impending housing crisis for low-income seniors.

Silvera for Seniors CEO Arlene Adanson said they have 650 seniors on their waiting list and the province needs to build 500 new units of seniors’ affordable housing per year for the foreseeable future to head off the problem.

She said Silvera was making headway with the provincial government to make sure more affordable housing will be built and she hopes that continues, regardless of who wins the PC party leadership race.

“We reached out to the three candidates and asked them how they would move this forward and what they would do to expedite it,” she explained.

“We received some responses this week and it seems all of them are committed, whomever gets the seat, we need to make sure that it’s more than just a conversation and that we continue to see action, to make progress.”

Adanson added she’s encouraged the candidates are talking about seniors as a priority, but says Calgarians need to make sure action is taken.
