Calgary police say charges are pending against the driver of a car that struck and critically injured a student, who was crossing a street on his skateboard near the University of Calgary.
The man, believed to be in his 20’s, was heading to the university to write exams around 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, when he was hit by the car on 32nd Avenue Northwest.
Sergeant with the Traffic Section, Mike ter Kuile, says police believe he pressed the crossing light before entering the intersection on his board.
“The pedestrian light was still in operation, according to some witness statements. We’re trying to determine the visibility of that pedestrian as he was crossing the intersection. At this time, alcohol and drugs have been ruled out with respect to the driver,” said Sergeant ter Kuile
The student was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
ter-Kuile says they’re interviewing the drivers of other vehicles that had stop for the light, but he’s hoping more witnesses will come forward.
