Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter dead at 76: reports

Former boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter has reportedly died at the age of 76 after a battle with prostate cancer.

Carter spent nearly 20 years in jail after he was wrongly convicted of a triple murder in 1966.

After his release from jail in 1985 at the age of 48, Carter became an advocate for others wrongly convicted. He served as the executive director of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted, a non-profit based in Toronto.

His case inspired Bob Dylan’s 1975 song Hurricane and the 1999 film The Hurricane starring Denzel Washington.

Originally from New Jersey, Carter had since moved to Toronto.
