Calgary police have charged a 22-year-old man in the stabbing deaths of five people

Calgary police have charged a 22-year-old man in the stabbing deaths of five people.

Matthew Douglas de Grood of Calgary is charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

Police Chief Rick Hanson told reporters that he spoke with the suspect’s father, a 33-year veteran with the force, and the officer and his wife are heartbroken.

According to reports, three of the victims are: Jordan Segura, Lawrence Hong and Kaitlin Perras.

The other two have been identified as Zackariah Rathwell and Josh Hunter, who were members of a local band called Zackariah and the Prophets.

The victims range in age from 22 to 27-years-old with four of them from Calgary and the other from Priddis.

The identities of the victims will be confirmed following autopsies which are not expected to be completed until late Wednesday.

Police Chief Rick Hanson says the suspect was an invited guest at a house party in the northwest community of Brentwood, celebrating the end of the school year.

Hanson says the suspect arrived at the party early Tuesday morning, after getting off work at a grocery store.

He apparently brought an instrument from work and started attacking people with it, before getting his hands on a knife, and began stabbing the victims one by one.

The Chief says officers came across a scene that was horrific.

The university is working with police in their investigation.

Hanson says the dead were all “good kids”.
