Western Canada High School team name change sparks debate

Western Canada High School’s plan to change the name of its sports teams and logo have reignited a debate over what is and isn’t offensive.

The school and the Calgary Board of Education made the decision over concerns it may be offensive to the aboriginal community.

An elder on the Siksika Nation tells Metro Calgary, he never considered the logo or the name to be offensive.

Another person tells the paper he can see both sides of the debate and if the Tsuu Tina or Siksika Nation had a sports team called the “White Men,” that probably wouldn’t go over so well either.

There’s no timeline for the change to take place.
