High River offering sandbags during spring melting

After the devastation caused by the June floods last year, it’s no doubt High River residents get edgy at the word flood.

With melting snow and ice starting to pool in fields and backyards, some are worried about seepage coming into their basements.

The province issued a spring runoff advisory yesterday, and Mayor Craig Snodgrass tells 660News the town is being proactive in handing out sandbags.

“We do recognize homeowners need some sandbags for their backyards and stuff just to block water from coming in through window wells etc. We’ve got a crew. All the NGO’s that are already in town, they’ve volunteered staff to go up. in the High River Fire Department, extra guys have come in off shift and are filling sandbags, just to have a few things ready for residents that need them.” says Snodgrass.

He also wants to emphasize this isn’t a river emergency, just a really quick melt of snow in and around the town.

“It’s not an emergency situation so we don’t want to create a gong show anywhere” adds Snodgrass.
