Nenshi defending comments about hiring diversity

The mayor is clarifying his comments over diversity at city hall.

Naheed Nenshi made comments at a Calgary Economic Development Lecture with respect to the make-up of the city’s workforce and he questioned whether enough was being done to promote diversity.

He says his comment was misconstrued, and he simply wants to make sure internal candidates who qualify for a job aren’t being discriminated against.

“We have to ask ourselves questions about are there any inadvertant or unthinking or systemic biases that are preventing us from finding the best qualified people for those leadership jobs?” Nenshi said.

Nenshi says the Institute of Corporate Directors had a meering about the exact issue Thursday without any coverage in the media, but somehow when he talks about diversity, it’s a big deal.
