Over 100 forced into the cold after car fire near a hotel

A fire in the beltline early Thursday morning forced more than 100 guests from their beds at the Hotel Arts.

The blaze broke-out in a vehicle just before 3:30 a.m. at 1st Street and 12th Avenue S.W.

First responders say it started at the P2 level of the underground parkade. Thick black smoke made ventilation a concern and guests were forced to evacuate.

Don is in Calgary from Edmonton.

“You could hear the beeping sound, after a bit I phoned down to see if it would be turned off or not, they said no we need to evacuate. So we slowly trickled out.” he said.

A lot of those affected were still in their pajamas carrying their personal belongings. They were sheltered by the TransAlta building across the street for just over two hours.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
