A local coalition says human trafficking has increased by 500 per cent in the province in the last two years.

The numbers come from ACT Alberta, or the Action Coalition on Human Trafficking Alberta Association, in 2012 and 2011.

Officials say the statistics actually speak to an increased awareness of the problem.

The federal government gave ‘ACT’ a $200,000 grant on Saturday to fund a two year project to stop sex trafficking in Edmonton.

ACT Alberta provides assistance to victims, by providing counselling, shelter, and reaching out to the public with awareness campaigns.
