Overseas volunteering popular with Canadians over 50

A growing trend for Canadians 50 and over is heading overseas to do volunteer work.

According to Habitat For Humanity, eight years ago – twenty Canadians travelled abroad to build homes for people in need while last year, that number hit 1800.

Of the fourteen countries where Habitat For Humanity raises money, Canada is known for sending the most people overseas, 30 per cent of them are over 50.

Spokesman Mike Boylan tells 660News, there’s tremendous demand to build in warmer locales in the winter months, but they want people to know they need people all year round.

Boylan says not only is it a great opportunity to travel and meet interesting people, but it’s also a great way to get some exercise.

He adds they also send alot of school groups, university teams and groups of friends and families, including one family who is organizing a family reunion around a build.
