Former Calgary cab driver accused of beheading 4 young sons in Somalia

A small Somali town is in shock after learning a former Calgary cab driver beheaded his four young sons.

Local press is reporting the deaths occurred on Monday.

The man accused is 60 year old Omar Shire Hassan, who had lived in Calgary up until a few months ago.

RBC Radio says Quadra Addawe learned of the crime by a neighbour in Mogadishu, 330 kilometres away.

The murders happened in the central town of Beledweyne, in the region of Hiiraan.

His 29-year-old estranged wife tells the Canadian Press the children were 11, 9, 7 and 6.

Addawe says the children had never been to Canada, they were Kenyan born and had Canadian citizenship through their father who emigrated here 30 years ago.

She had tried to come to the Canada herself, but her efforts were unsuccessful.

The grieving mother doesn’t know the motive for the murders but insists Hassan was mentally stable.

According to a senior police commissioner, he has been taken into custody for interrogation.
