Alarm bells for post-secondary budgets

Alberta’s largest faculty association is sounding alarm bells as students head back to college and university over the budget slashes imposed by the province in the spring budget.

Nearly 7-per cent of funding was cut, amounting to about $147-million.

The Confederation of Alberta Faculty Association President says, “it’s the most harm done to colleges and universities since the 1930s.”

He says the cuts are leading to larger class sizes, program cuts, and less effective campus services.

However, Advanced Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk tells The Calgary Herald, the province’s advanced education sector remains the second best funded in the country despite the cuts.
