Construction on Memorial Drive structure a go despite flood risk

City officials insist an expensive art project set for Memorial Drive will be safe from future flooding.

Construction on the $1.3-million sculpture in Parkdale was set to begin this summer, but has been delayed until next year.

The art piece will feature an inverted mountain landscape made out of concrete with water continuously running through it.

The Calgary Herald reports the sculpture will be part of a new plaza space, along with a pedestrian bridge and benches.

Although the delays had nothing to do with the flood, city workers said the delays have allowed them to focus on more pressing projects.
