Military presence to be scaled back in Alberta

The number of soldiers helping out in flood-ravaged Alberta is about to be reduced.

Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths says the threat of the floods that forced people from their homes has passed.

He says it would be a waste of the Canadian Forces’ talent to keep all 2,300 soldiers in southern Alberta helping out pumping out basements.

Brigadier-General Christian Juneau says he will make his assessment in the next 24 hours and it is likely the reduction will be in the 500 to 700 range.

It’s expected a number of troops will remain in High River, where the town’s 13,000 residents remain out on mandatory evacuation.

Juneau says the numbers could be further reduced as the need lessens.
