Pipeline leak in northern Alberta

The company involved in a pipeline leak north of Grande Prairie says it involves hundreds of barrels of natural gas condensate.

An estimated 950 barrels of natural gas liquids and by-products have spilled about 90 kilometres northwest of the community of Manning.

This is the third spill involving a pipeline in Alberta and BC in the last few weeks.

Plains Midstream Canada says it has about 40 emergency workers on scene and that they’re doing what they can to minimize any damage to the environment.

This is the third pipeline spill for the company in three years.

Plains Midstream says the latest incident involves its 79-kilometre long Kemp pipeline system, carrying condensate and other natural gas liquids.

The line has since been shut down until they can determine how to fix it.

There have been two other spills in the past two weeks, another one in northern Alberta and the other in BC.

An estimated 9.5 million litres of industrial wastewater spilled from an Apache line south of Zama City, Alberta, on June 1st.

Then, this past week, came a small crude oil leak in a Kinder Morgan interprovincial pipeline near Merritt, BC.

Though only 12 barrels spilled in that leak, environmentalists are concerned it’s the fifth spill in six years on the nearly 60-year-old line.
