Group wants wild horses declared a heritage animal

A group is hoping the Canadian government will designate wild horses a heritage animal.

The Canadian Wild Horse Foundation is launching a petition urging the feds to protect the animals from being trapped or slaughtered.

CWH Executive Director, Adrienne Calvert, tells The Calgary Herald she believes it’s a matter of cultural, environmental and scientific value.

The Alberta government suspended the trapping of feral horses for the 2012-2013 season, but isn’t planning any legislation at this time.

The CWH is hoping to end the issue once and for all by taking the fight to Ottawa.
