No injuries or damage after major grass fire north of Airdrie

It took thirty-six firefighters from six communities, but a large grass fire just north of Airdrie has been put out.

The blaze started around 4:30 p.m. Sunday in a field near some acreages on the east side of the QE 2 and took about three hours to extinguish.

Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel tells 660News when crews arrived at the scene, they were greeted by quickly spreading flames.

“As it rapidly moved by the wind from the south to the north and at this time it has consumed approximately 30 acres of grassland,” says Rabel.

Rabel adds fencing running through the area made it tricky to move equipment around the field, but he’s happy no buildings were damaged, that includes a number of homes in the area.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, though witnesses say sparks from ATVs may have been the cause.
