Edmonton hospitals to offer drop-off for unwanted babies

Two Edmonton hospitals will soon begin accepting unwanted abandoned babies.

Grey Nuns Hospital in Mill Woods and Misericordia Hospital on the west side of the city will make the announcement this week. The hospitals are run by Covenant Health, a  Catholic-based organization.

They will become the second and third hospitals in the country to accept unwanted newborns.

The program, known as Angels Cradles, started three years ago in Vancouver.
Considered a safe haven from prosecution, the St. Paul’s Hospital drop-off has been utilized only once in three years.  According to the Calgary Herald, the drop-off area is marked by an angel sign near the hospital’s emergency entrance.  The parents can walk in, place the baby in a bassinet, and then 30 seconds later an alarm goes off, giving the parents enough time to leave while maintaining their anonymity.

Alberta has had a handful of cases in recent years in which infants have been killed or abandoned by their mothers.
