City plans for composting plant

City hall is pondering plans for a multi-million dollar composting facility that would cut down on the garbage being hauled off to landfills.

Council passed a budget request Monday for up to $25-million for a site and up to $133-million to fund the centre that would process organic materials collected in a Calgary-wide green cart program.

The Calgary Herald reports city landfills are currently 60 per cent full and officials want to divert 80 per cent of waste away from them by 2020.

A pilot green cart composting pilot project has been successfully tested in 7500 residences in Brentwood, Abbeydale, Southwood, and Cougar Ridge.
