Shelters swamped as thousands left waiting for affordable housing

A lack of affordable housing is putting a strain on shelters in the city.

The Calgary women’s emergency shelter says they had to turn away 3,000 women and children in 2012 because of a lack of room.

Officials say more and more people are staying longer at the shelter because they can’t find affordable housing.

Darren Paddock, the president of Rentfaster.ca tells The Calgary Herald, a booming population also means more competition for those with lower income.

Around 3,000 Calgarians are kept waiting for subsidized housing each month.
