Taxi app gets city go-ahead

The City of Calgary has made its decision regarding a new smartphone app designed to connect customers with a cab quicker.

The Taxi and Limousine Advisory Committee says the new app does not break any by-laws and have given it the green light, but many cab companies aren’t on-board with the program.

The CEO and founder of the company that develops the app, Jeff Doepker says the opposition from taxi companies doesn’t mean there is no support behind the service.

“It goes without saying, that if there was no need for the service we’re providing, nobody would be talking about it right now,” says Doepker.

Doepker says he’s happy with the decision coming from the city but the case is still in court with several taxi companies claiming the the app is illegal because it allows people to unfairly bypass dispatch services by directly contacting the driver.
