Calgary golfers will only have a couple of more years to play McCall Lake Golf Course.
The City of Calgary has announced it plans to sell the northeast golf course after the 2014 season.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi says the current business model for city golf courses is not sustainable and changes are needed.
“The McCall Lake repurposing vision is to create a place with a unique and compelling identity,” says Mayor Nenshi. “To create an inviting space that will provide opportunities for both work and play in the Northeast.”
Area alderman Ray Jones says while he’s disappointed about losing the course he’s also excited about the potential of re-purposing of the site for industrial and recreational uses.
“The divesture of McCall Lake Golf Course is bittersweet,” says Jones. “While I’m sad to see the golf course close, I’m very excited about the potential repurposing of this site for industrial and recreational purposes.”
The city has also announced it’s working on a new fee structure for it’s golf operations to make them more viable which will be looked at following the 2013 golf season.
