Unrealistic body image making girls less confident, survey says

A Canadian women’s organization says we need to put more pressure on media to portray women realistically.

The Canadian Women’s Foundation says 90 per cent of Canadians think over-sexualized images can have a negative effect on young girls.

Director Beth Malcolm tells 660News, the result can be low self confidence, eating disorders, and depression.

Malcolm says the foundation funds programs to help girls stop and think about what they are seeing.

“What we’re trying to do, is help build girl’s confidence and their skills, but also help build their critical thinking skills, so that they can look at media, and look at it critically and analyze it and say: wait a minute, this doesn’t represent me, and I want to see myself in the media, ” she says.

Malcolm says the only way to change what you are seeing is to keep challenging it.
