Alberta appeal court imposes tougher sentence on former police commission head

CALGARY – Alberta’s highest court has imposed a tougher sentence on a former police commission chairman for child pornography and child luring charges.

Curtis Paradee of Taber, Alta., pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced last May to 90 days in jail, to be served on weekends, and an 18-month conditional term.

The Alberta Court of Appeal ruled that the sentence for the crimes was unfit and has sentenced Paradee to 18 months in jail, followed by three years probation.

Paradee, who was 41 at the time, admitted to posing as a 20-year-old man and getting a 16-year-old girl to perform sex acts for him via a webcam.

The appeal court judges wrote there is an overwhelming need to protect vulnerable children from exploitation from such crimes.

Paradee was the chairman of the Taber Police Commission.
