Organizer of bridge protest apologizes

The organizer of a protest that stalled traffic on the 14th Street Bridge earlier this month is now apologizing to the Mayor and Calgarians.

Two dozen members of the Blackfoot Confederacy Warriors forced the bridge to shut down for a few hours on January 12th during an Idle No More march.

Carmel Crowchild says the group, angered a bylaw officer had interrupted a pipe ceremony, decided to disrupt the busy roadway and demanded to speak to Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

Crowchild has now met with Nenshi, and says he was very patient and understanding.

Crowchild tells The Calgary Herald that while he still stands on principle that disrupting the pipe ceremony was a “violation of the freedom of religion”, he’s sorry about the inconvenience.
