First Nations chiefs from across the province are in Calgary Thursday to elect a regional representative to the Assembly of First Nations.
Five people are running for the job, including the former Chief of the Tsuu T’ina, Sandford Big Plume.
The winning candidate will be replacing George Stanley, who recently lost to Shawn Atleo to become AFN National Chief.
One academic tells The Calgary Herald the election may have little influence on the current “Idle No More” debate.
Linda Many Guns at the University of Lethbridge says only 40 per cent of those who identify themselves as First Nations live in reserves and many First Nations bands do not belong to the AFN.
