Residents of northwest building displaced by attic fire

Six people have been displaced from their homes following a two alarm blaze in the northwest community of Sunnyside.

Crews were called to the 200 block of 9th Street northwest shortly after 9:00 Saturday morning and found smoke pouring from the multifamily complex.

It took dozens of firefighters two hours to knock the flames down and get things under control.

The fire department says crews well remain at the scene searching for hot spots for most of the day.

Battalion Chief Ken Uzelock says the fire required an aerial attack.

“When crews arrived, they identified there was fire in the attic above the third floor. They tried to access that but it was difficult because of the layout of the suites in the building, so had to open up the roof to gain access,” explains Uzelock.

Four of the five suites in the building were occupied and it’s unknown when residents will be able to return home.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
