Saskatchewan premier, U.S. governors push Obama for Keystone pipeline approval

REGINA – Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall and 10 U.S. Republican governors are urging President Barack Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline.

The political leaders have sent a joint letter to Obama that says the pipeline is crucial for energy security and the future economic prosperity of both countries.

The TransCanada line would carry bitumen from the Alberta oilsands to U.S. refineries in the Gulf of Mexico.

The governors and Wall, who has repeatedly called for the pipeline to be approved, also say the project will create thousands of jobs on both sides of the border.

Obama rejected the pipeline last year, but invited TransCanada to file a new application with an altered route that would skirt an ecologically sensitive area in Nebraska.

TransCanada did that and is now waiting word on approval from the State Department.
