Food prices on the rise in 2013

Canadians will be shelling out more at the grocery store in 2013.

Researchers at the University of Guelph are predicting food prices will rise by 1.5 – 3.5 per cent this year on average, with meat and eggs being the most pricey.

A severe drought in the U.S. in 2012 was a big factor in driving up costs.

Although many factors are involved, researchers say our own habits may also be to blame.

The average Canadian household will throw out nearly 40 per cent of the food they purchase this year.

Professor Sylvain Charlebois says we need to be mindful as consumers to waste less.

“Some studies suggest that with sound food waste practices you can actually reduce your food bill by up to one percent in one year,” said Charlebois.

Unfortunately, he adds the rising prices mean more Canadians will be turning to food banks to make ends meet.
