Avalanche risk high with snowfall

Parks Canada says the next big snowfall in the mountains will trigger an avalanche.

There have been snowslides in the last few weeks including one in Lake Louise Sunday that was a minor incident.

Marc Ledwidge with Parks Canada says there has not been a significant avalanche cycle but that could change.

“We are set up right now with some layers so that if we do get a big snowfall we will see some significant avalanche activity.  The forecast for the next few days and into the weekend is basically sunny and no snow, so we are waiting for the January snowstorm, here,” said Ledwidge.

He adds the cold temperatures and dryness weaken the snow packs at the base and those conditions also make it hard for new snow fall to ‘stick’ to surface snow.
