Alberta Liberal leader Raj Sherman tells the Calgary Herald in a year-end interview that Calgary-Buffalo MLA Kent Hehr is free to join another party if that’s what he wishes.

Sherman was referring to a recent rift in the Alberta Liberal party after Hehr called for progressive parties in the province to unite to defeat the Redford Conservatives in the next provincial election.

The call was rejected by Liberal party President Todd Van Vliet, but his response triggered a backlash as well with some senior party officials calling for both Van Vliet and Sherman to step down.

For his part, Hehr says he is not considering leaving the party.
