CBE teacher faces charges in sexual assault of 14-year-old boy

A Calgary Board of education teacher has been charged with sexual assault after an alleged year long relationship with a 14-year-old male student.

The woman, in her 40’s was arrested Tuesday, after police were alerted to the relationship, by a member of the public.

The teacher as well as the school she works at will not be identified by police in order to protect the identity of the 14-year-old boy.

Staff Sgt Kelly Campbell says she can’t comment on what the victim is feeling, only that he is co-operating with the investigation.

“The nature of the charges, speak to, that you cannot consent. She is in a position of authority. So in terms of the law, it cannot be consensual.”

Officers do not believe there are any other victims.

The teacher has been suspended without pay, and will appear in court January 28th.

The Calgary Board of Education says it’s devastated to find out one of their teachers has been charged.

It says there have been no concerns with this teacher before.

The CBE says this is unacceptable, adding they do all they can to prevent it including police checks on all staff when they are hired.

It also says they are disturbed that two instances of this nature have happen in a short period of time this after a janitor was charged with sexual assault of a 7-year-old girl just last month.
