Calgary’s newest Member of Parliament has taken her seat in the House of Commons.

Joan Crockatt made her way into the Legislature on Wednesday behind Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

Crockatt was elected on November 26th in a by-election to replace long-time Member of Parliament Lee Richardson — who resigned to work for the provincial government in May.

She says she’s getting used to the new responsibilities.

“The pace of bills and information that’s coming at you and the things that you really want to be aware of, besides the fact that everything that’s going on in your constituency that you’re trying to get a grasp of, because you really want to start off right away, hit the ground running. Know what your constituency issues are, make sure you know what the bills are that are coming up, you know how you feel about them and things like that.”

Crockatt is the first woman to be elected in the riding.
