More than a year after the introduction of a distracted drivers law, Calgary police report they are issuing more, not fewer tickets.
Traffic Constable Jim Lebedeff says between January and the end of October, they have written up more than 5100 drivers, which works out to an average of some 570 offences a month.
Lebedeff says he agrees with Police Chief Rick Hanson who thinks it might be time to add some demerit points to the penalty.
He says for many drivers, a $172 fine is not enough of a deterrent to put away the phone, but if there is a possibility they will have to pay more to insure their ride or could lose their licence they might think twice.
Lebedeff says it almost appears as if drivers have either forgotten it’s illegal to drive distracted of they simply don’t care and that’s a danger to everyone on the road.
