Southbound Crowchild Trail is open, but city crews are expected to be busy going into Monday’s afternoon rush at the earliest.

Following a water main break Saturday night that shut down SB Crowchild for most of the day, drivers are now being diverted at the 33rd Avenue overpass and then back onto the road.

There are no disruptions along northbound Crowchild.

Ward 8 Alderman John Mar said city crews isolated the break below the overpass and the diversion will likely be going on during the afternoon rush.

“The morning commute is going to be difficult, I’m not going to lie to you, afternoon as well,” he said. “We have to fix this, this is something that no one could have anticipated because it is a water main break.”

“CPS is going to be assisting us in directing traffic through the duration, crews are going to be working 24 hours a day to restore the roadway.”

He said the pipes in that area are quite dated, but it would be difficult to replace them all as it would shut down Crowchild for weeks at a time.

Mar added commuters are encouraged to avoid the area Monday if possible during peak hours.
